Monster Mouth

May 8th, 2009

Okay, I went a little overboard, but here is the final version from the sketch detail I posted a few days ago. I’m getting into wanting to add more, for lack of a better term, ornamentation to my work. It kind of started with the Greek Gods (Poseidon) that I’m working on parallel to the monsters. When I started working on sketches for GG, I really hadn’t worked on anything consistently for a year. And, when I got back to my desk and started drawing, what came out was this curvy, streamy look that surrounded my final character(s).

So, here goes with “Monster Mouth”. This one was tough, because I had a plan (which can be good and bad), for the front part. Draw this multi-level monster swallowing monster, and then have a version of Max from Sendak’s WTWTA suspended above this thing. But the background (which could go either way with needing something or not) and the bottom area, I had no idea what to do with. Well, anyway, here’s the solution:

Is it busy? Yeah. Is it unusually symmetrical?!? Heck, yeah.

Next up is the painting for this piece. To save some time, I’m actually going to let the sketch live on as its own piece, and I’m going to crop and focus on the most important part of the illustration: The monster swallowing monster maybe swallowing Max:

I’ll let you know what happens…

Hi! As much as I love the finished painting of “Monster Mouth”, I truly love the sketch more. Do you intend to offer prints of the sketch for sale?
